Movie Review: "The Omen" (1976)

Movie: "The Omen"
Director: Richard Donner
Year: 1976
Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour, 51 minutes

When Katherine (Lee Remick) and Robert Thorne's (Gregory Peck) baby dies right after birth, Robert makes the secret decision to replace their son with an abandoned baby boy that was born at the same time. They named their son Damien (Harvey Stephens). It turns out that Damien is getting increasingly more evil over time, and that he may be the actual Antichrist.

Another wonderfully done, classic, must-see horror movie that we watched on Halloween night! This movie has every element that a horror movie needs to be successful. Everything about this movie comes together so wonderfully to make a creepy, scary, evil horror movie that makes you fear children even more. SEE, ANOTHER MOVIE WHERE KIDS KILL ADULTS!!!! The movie is full of great imagery and has a brilliant mythology behind it. The battle between good and evil is obviously the main story line, and it is executed flawlessly. The soundtrack, that classical sounding chorus score, is chilling and eerie and fits so well into each and every scene. Gregory Peck does a fantastic job in this film, in fact, the entire cast is superb overall!

This movie is not just scary, it is interesting as well. It is, by any definition, a good film in general, not just a good "horror" film. You cannot just remake classic films like this and do a piss-poor job of executing the remake. QUIT TRYING TO FIX WHAT AIN'T BROKEN, HOLLYWOOD (since we know you're reading).

My Rating: 10/10
BigJ's Rating: 10/10
IMDB's Rating: 7.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 85%
Do we recommend this movie: ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

  1. Another one I *love*! Did you see the sequel(s)? Were there two more? Can't remember.....I just know remember being disappointed in all but the original. I had hopes for the remake, but, well, bleah.

Have done Rosemary's Baby on this blog yet?
