Movie Review: "Kentucky Fried Movie" (1977)

Kentucky Fried Movie is a series of short skits that parody topical issues and popular culture of the 1970's.

"The popcorn you're eating has been pissed in! Film at 11." This opening line of "Kentucky Fried Movie" sets the tone for the whole film and lets the audience know what kind of silliness is destined to follow. And believe us, there's no shortage of silliness here, folks. From outrageous commercials about oil drilling in teenagers faces to film parodies of porn, there is a wide range of shocking and hilarious shorts here. Much of the movie is funny, but in an old-school kind of way. As with any sketch based movie, some are hits and some are misses, and the misses are definitely big ones. The primary focus of the film is "A Fistful of Yen," which mocks "Enter the Dragon" and Bruce Lee himself. This is also our favorite part of the movie. It's so outrageously over the top that it's impossible not to laugh. But, if you are easily offended by racism, sex or language, don't watch this movie. It definitely seeks to offend and tells of a time where it was culturally acceptable to be brash and not so PC. In fact, we're actually quite surprised this movie got made at all because it can be out there at times. We have a hunch this would be rated NC-17 by today's rigid standards. It's like an R-rate version of Saturday Night Live. While there are much funnier movies out there, it's nice to finally get to see such a pioneer in comedic history!

My Rating: 6/10
BigJ's Rating: 6.5/10
IMDB's Rating: 6.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 80%
Do we recommend this movie: Sure, why not?
