Movie Review: "Apollo 13" (1995)

Movie"Apollo 13"
Year Nominated: 1996
Director: Ron Howard
Rating: PG
Running Time: 2 hours, 20 minutes
Did It Win?: No.

The Apollo 13 mission was meant to be NASA's third trip to the moon. The American public, however, is losing interest in space exploration, starting to see moon landings as routine. This Apollo mission is about to catch the interest of everyone across the world when their ship malfunctions, changing the ultimate goal of goal from landing on the moon to simply making it home alive.

Based on a true story, Ron Howard's "Apollo 13" was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Howard proves here, definitively, that he is capable of being a brilliant director when he puts his heart and soul into his work. He has slipped lately, which makes us sad because we typically love his work. Howard brings together an all-star, fantastic cast including Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, and Gary Sinise, and does a stellar job of building up each character so as an audience, we feel connected to them and their cosmic plight. Hanks plays astronaut Jim Lovell, and though all the characters are integral to the story, the primary focus is on Jim and his family. Of course, Tom Hanks is fabulous because, let's face it, when is he not? Also wonderful is Kathleen Quinlan, who plays Jim's wife Marilyn in a performance that earned her a much deserved best supporting actress Oscars nomination. She has so many great moments in the film that draw an emotional response right out of us, from the times she remains strong for her kids to ordering camera crews off her lawn in the midst of sheer and utter chaos. She is not the only actor to receive a nomination from "Apollo 13." Ed Harris was also honored with a nomination for his performance as Gene Kranz, who runs the Apollo 13 mission from Houston. Harris offers up the commanding presence needed for this character, and we truly love Harris' hurried but straight-faced demeanor. The acting is really great across the board, from Sinise's portrayal of Ken Mattingly, who was banned from the Apollo 13 mission because of exposure to the measles but never actually had them, to Kevin Bacon's performance as Jack Swigert, who is the young buck of the group and the astronaut with the most groupies.

Beyond this, the look of this film is truly outstanding. Howard and the other makers of this film were able to create wonderful zero-gravity environment by actually filming on NASA's KC-135, aka the "Vomit Comet," which does parabolic arcs to achieve weightlessness for about 25 seconds at a time. This allows the actors to have a realistic and breathtaking on-screen weightless in appearance, which sells the outer space aspect of the film. In addition, the "from space" shots are truly tremendous, and it's so obvious that Howard painstakingly researched the hell out of the subject. Audiences crave a mixture of drama, emotion, danger, and acting, and "Apollo 13" is able to quench all of those desired. It is a truly engrossing, emotional, action-packed, edge-of-you-seat experience, and one we love even to this day.

Movie Review #385: "How to Be Single" (2016)

Movie"How to Be Single"
Ticket Price: $9.75
Director: Christian Ditter
Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour, 50 minutes
After spending her four years of college in a relationship, Alice (Dakota Johnson) wants to take a break from her boyfriend Josh (Nicholas Braun) and be single for a while so she can find herself. At her new job, she befriends Robin (Rebel Wilson), a woman who loves to party and is all about the single lifestyle. Meanwhile, Alice's sister Meg (Leslie Mann) decides she wants to become a mother, despite being single and a doctor with a hectic schedule. Also, a woman named Lucy (Allison Brie) runs an algorithm on dating sites to find the perfect future husband.

When we heard about "How to Be Single," we were looking forward to finally seeing a film filled with strong female characters who want to be independent and have fun as single ladies. However, that's not actually what "How to Be Single" is all about. What we get here is a film primarily about four women, the majority of which are trying to find a man in some capacity.

The primary focus of the film is on Alice, played by Dakota Johnson, a young college graduate who has just broken up with her long-term boyfriend so she can find herself. However, most of Alice's time on screen is spent talking about men, talking to men, or talking about relationships. Whether she meets a new guy and has the possibility of starting a new romance, or whether she's trying to decide whether or not to get back together with her ex-boyfriend Josh, played by Nicholas Braun, or whether she thinks she should have a one night stand with the studly local bartender named Tom, played by Anders Holm, who is the love 'em and leave 'em type, Alice is almost constantly involved in or around men. She gets advice on how to be single from her coworker Robin, played by Rebel Wilson, who parties every night and leads a promiscuous lifestyle, though she's always so drunk, she can never remember the sex. Robin and Alice hit is off as friends very quickly, thrusting them into the bar/club/scene environment every chance they can. Alice's older sister Meg, played Leslie Mann, is a very busy, career-oriented obstetrician, and though she's delivered thousands of babies, she has never wanted one herself...that is, until she spends one minute in a room alone with a patient's child. This is supposed to make Meg suddenly realize how much she actually wants a baby of her own because how dare Hollywood make a movie about a woman not actually wanting to have kids! Nope, those responsible for this film think babies are just so damn cute and of course, as a woman, Meg naturally wants to have a kid so she can fulfill her socially expected role of being a mother. This is one cinematic trope we wish, so badly, could be done away with forever. There is also one other major female character with her own subplot, Lucy, played by Allison Brie, whose sole purpose is to find a potential husband based on the algorithm she created to find her perfect match, only she hasn't gotten that far because she's a stage five clinger and sends men running as soon as she reminds them they are actually in a relationship together. So, just to recap, we have the crazy, neurotic clingy woman, the woman who immerses herself in her relationships, the woman who only parties and gets laid but has no emotional attachments to anyone, and the woman who didn't know she wanted a baby until she spend 20 seconds alone with a baby. No, no stereotypes here!

Being a comedy, we were obviously hoping to laugh a lot, but unfortunately, on top of containing nearly every genre-related trope in existence, most the jokes fall completely flat. We did laugh a couple of times, mostly at jokes delivered by Jason Mantzoukas, who plays George. George has a pretty funny exchange with Tom towards the end of the film, and this is the single most hilarious scene in the entire movie. Also Jake Lacy, who plays Ken, the much younger love interest of Meg, has a likable and humorous charm. Lacy has been in many hit or miss movies, but he's always been the best parts of those films for us. Rebel Wilson, we're sad to say, has reached her expiry date with us. She attempts her fair share of jokes, but they miss their mark nearly every time as her shtick is more than a little tired. She needs to do something different. Dakota Johnson plays her typical doe-eyed romantic, surprisingly reminiscent of her role in "Fifty Shades of Grey," but without all of the S&M, nudity, and a far less controlling boyfriend. She also brings more of her annoying laugh-giggle to the table, which is supremely grating on the ears.

Apparently, there's a right way to be single, and a wrong way to be single, but after seeing "How to Be Single," we're still not sure the right message is getting across to audiences everywhere. This is not a new type of film, but rather the same old thing masquerading as something different. The pacing is dreadful, and there were many times we felt flat out bored. Also, if you watch this one, notice how all the most hilarious jokes and exchanges go to the male characters. It should be a crime to have all the painfully unfunny jokes in a movie featuring 4 female leads going to the women. The bottom line is we went in hoping for something fun and hilarious and left the theater realizing there was little fun to be had. Skip this one.

Movie Review: "Inception" (2010)

Movie"Inception"
Year Nominated: 2011
Director: Christopher Nolan
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 2 hours, 28 minutes
Did It Win?: No.

A thief named Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), who specializes in obtaining information through dream sharing, is hired to do the impossible: implant an idea in the mind of a young CEO named Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy) and convince him it was his own, a process known as Inception.

Director Christopher Nolan creates a fabulous dream world in his film "Inception." Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Cobb, a thief who specializes in stealing information. He uses people's dreams to commit corporate espionage. Joining DiCaprio are Joseph Gorden-Levitt as Arthur, Cobb's partner and friend, Ellen Page as Ariadne, the architect who builds the dream worlds, Tom Hardy as Eames, the forger who can impersonate other people in dreams, Dileep Rao as Yusuf, who is the chemist that creates sedatives to keep subjects asleep, Ken Watanabe as Sato, their client, and Cilian Murphy as Robert Fischer, their subject, who must have an idea implanted inside his dreams. Add Tom Berenger, Marion Cotillard, Pete Postlethwaite, Lukas Haas, and Michael Caine into the mix, and this is an extraordinarily brilliant cast of characters. Separately, all of these actors are excellent, but together, man, they flesh out a true all star, wonderful cast.

"Inception" messes with the viewer's perception of reality as it creates dreams within dreams, leaving what's real and what isn't somewhat open for interpretation. The rules created for the dream world change throughout the film to fit the story rather than the story changing to fit the rules. How do we know this? Because it's explained to us through a lot of exposition and hand holding. Nolan loves his exposition, explaining how everything is supposed to work at any given time and pretty much constantly throughout this movie. Despite the overall flawed nature in the way it's presented, "Inception" still manages to be an amazingly entertaining piece of cinema. The visuals are outstanding as practical effects and CGI are blended seamlessly to create a convincing dream world. We love how Nolan favors practical effects over everything else, and the way he is able to create this integration is simply amazing. The story is inventive and engaging despite its convoluted nature. We never feel ourselves getting bored or tired of the story, but we do get a bit tired of how the rules of the games are changed mid-movie. The acting, like we mentioned, is great from everyone involved. The pacing is very good and even though it has a long run time, it doesn't feel like it's nearly two and a half hours. Overall, "Inception" is a fun and entertaining ride that offers a visual spectacle to delight the senses.

Oscar Movie Review: "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964)

Movie"Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb"
Year Nominated: 1965
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Rating: PG
Running Time: 1 hour, 35 minutes
Did It Win?: No.

During the Cold War, a rogue US General sends a fleet of bombers carrying nuclear payloads to attack targets in Russia. However, the Russians have just completed their not yet announced doomsday machine in which any attack on Russia would result in immediate and automatic global nuclear fallout. Now, the president of the United States (Peter Sellers) must gather all of his advisers and try to find a way to stop the attack and prevent the impending global tragedy.

Can you think of a better movie than "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb"?  Nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Stanley Kubrick's brilliant dark satire about the nuclear arms race of the Cold War is still just as good as it was when we first watched it many years ago. It was released in 1964, an era when many people lived under the constant threat of thermonuclear war. Well, that's what many in the government and media wanted people to believe. Despite the topical nature of "Dr. Strangelove" to its era, it still remains amazingly relevant and its humor has stood the test of time. Over 50 years later, we still find ourselves laughing out loud at the witty nature of this film.

Peter Sellers pulls triple duty here as Capt. Lionel Mandrake, a British officer stationed in the United States under an officer exchange program, President Merkin Muffley the president of the United States, and the eccentric Dr. Strangelove, a former German scientist who served under Hitler, but has since become a U.S. citizen and is now the head of weapons research and development. Sellers earned a well deserved Oscar nomination for his performances in this film. He is brilliant, funny, and much of what he does was improvised, which makes his performance all the more impressive. Sellers might make this movie, but he isn't the only actor who shines as there are many other great performances. George C. Scott, who plays General 'Buck' Turgidson, the president's main military advisor, manages to play both commanding and hysterical; Sterling Hayden, who plays the paranoid General Jack D. Ripper (and while typing out his name, BigJ just now got the 50+ year old joke), the man who went rogue and is responsible for the entire crisis, and Slim Pickens as Major 'King' Kong, the pilot of one of the bombers carrying its nuclear cargo, who has one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Altogether, these actors make up a fine, uproarious cast.

We absolutely love everything about "Dr. Strangelove," from its brilliant directing by Stanley Kubrick, to its splendid improvising by Peter Sellers, to its simple yet complex and hilarious story. The dialogue is excellent, the camera work is top notch and beautiful, and the performances are both explosive and zany. We love popping in this film from time to time so we can laugh at this absurd yet extraordinary and timeless piece of cinematic history.

Movie Review #384: "The Witch" (2016)

Movie"The Witch"
Ticket Price: $9.75
Director: Robert Eggers
Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour, 33 minutes
After William (Ralph Ineson) is banished from a communal plantation, he settles his family on the outskirts of a forest. While trying to build a thriving farm, black magic and dark forces descend upon the family, creating paranoia and accusations that start to drive them apart.

Director Robert Eggers delivers a creepy, tension-filled, well made horror movie in his feature film debut, "The Witch." Much like "The Babadook" and "It Follows," "The Witch" doesn't resort to cheap jump scares to startle its audience. Instead, it starts from the beginning and builds from an ominous atmosphere through the use of settings, lighting, and ambient sound. These visuals bring about a dramatic, compelling, and often visceral horror mystery. The fear given to audiences is not the type that will make you jump out of your seat, but rather, it's the type that is unnerving, playing on psychological terrors to make you feel uneasy. The film focuses on a Puritan family that is devoutly religious. The patriarch William, played by Ralph Ineson, has been banished from a plantation for what seems like religious differences with those in charge. He settles his family in a field on the outskirts of a forest. He has a wife named Katherine, played by Kate Dickie, and five children. Their oldest child is a teenage girl named Thomison, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, next is a boy that looks to be between the ages of 9-11 named Caleb, played by Harvey Scrimshaw, then there are the twins, a boy and a girl named Jonas and Mercy, played by Lucas Dawson and Ellie Grainger, and an infant son named Samuel, who was born on their farm settlement. It's when their newly born son Samuel disappears that all the trouble starts for this family. Eggers never makes Samuel's disappearance a mystery as we as the audience know exactly what happened to him. We also know what causes most of the other strange occurrences. This film isn't about creating a mystery, it's about witnessing the characters reacting to what they are experiencing. The family tears each other apart from the inside via paranoia, suspicion, and doubt, and these reactions are almost always horrific as hell. As Puritans in colonial times, these reactions can be just as terrifying as any witch.

"The Witch," unfortunately, is not without flaws. Our biggest critique of the movie is that it gets off to a very slow start. Unlike other meandering and slow beginnings, "The Witch" is content with methodically building its characters for an ultimate payoff, a great and haunting climax. However, time does drag slowly by in the first act, and it's hard not to notice this. The choice by Eggers to use the old English style of speaking dialogue will most certainly be off-putting to some viewers, though it didn't bother us. Finally, as we've mentioned, this is not your typical horror film. Fans of recent (and awful, but besides the point) horror films such as "Ouija," "The Gallows," and the "Insidious" series will most likely be bored and off-put by the lulls and lack of "expected" scares in "The Witch," but for true fans of the horror genre, put this one at the top of your "to view" list.

My Rating: 8/10
BigJ's Rating: 8/10
