Movie Review: "Society" (1989)

Director: Brian Yuzna
Year: 1989

Running Time: 1 hour, 39 minutes

A high school student named Bill begins to suspect his parents and his sisters aren't who he thought they were. It turns out, he's right. They are actually part of a strange society that performs bizarre rituals and has influential members who secretly control everything.

Don't you hate it when you start to suspect your parents are part of some weird sex cult that secretly controls the world? "Society" is directed by Brian Yuzna, who has directed other horror films like "Return of the Living Dead III," and "The Dentist." It is written by Rick Fry and Woody Keith, who both went on to work with Yuzna on his later film "Bride of the Re-Animator." The story is about a teenager named Bill Whitney (William Warlock), who is your typical, average high school student. When his sister's ex-boyfriend plays some tapes he secretly recorded, Bill starts to speculate that his family isn't who they say they are and may be part of a cult full of social elites. Matters only get worse when people start turning up dead, and it feels like everyone is hiding some nefarious secret.

"Society" is completely bizarre, but is also strangely enjoyable. It is from the same producers as "Re-Animator" and uses a similar style of both dark humor and visually unsettling imagery...and what great imagery that is! We hate to talk about the ending first, but the final act is really something to behold. It is off-the-wall bonkers weird with fantastic creature make-up and effects that we think still hold up to this day. Like many 80's films, the story itself deals with the differences between social classes. It's obvious to the average working blue collar Joe-Schmoe that the upper echelon in the 1% of society is a different species altogether, but "Society" takes that notion to the extreme with brilliant-yet-horrifying results. Apart from this distinction, it's a pretty standard teenage coming-of-age story with a twist. The acting isn't great. In fact, it's downright awful at times. That being said, the movie itself will probably keep you engaged due to the entertainment factor of its mystery and intrigue, which last long enough to get you to its big finale. As we said, the end makes everything worthwhile and will stick with us for years to come.

In the end, "Society" is a fun b-movie that is definitely worth checking out, especially for fans of gross-out, putrid-looking horror.
