We've said it many times on this site: if a horror movie franchise goes on long enough, it will eventually plunge into self-parody. The previous film in the "Child's Play" series, "Bride of Chucky," started to slowly wade into the realm of meta-comedy. Now, in "Seed of Chucky," the series has fallen head-first and is drowning in it. At this point, series creator Don Mancini was no longer satisfied with simply writing the "Child's Play" franchise, so he took full control, filling the director's chair as well. The story follows a living doll who is continually plagued by murderous nightmares despite being rather meek in reality. He/she has been forced to act as a ventriloquist dummy called Shithead (Billy Boyd) for an abusive owner named Psychs (Keith Lee-Castle). Shithead decides to seek out his/her parents, who he/she believes he/she has found in Hollywood working on the film "Chucky Goes Psycho." When he/she arrives, it turns out, the two dolls are just props, but a little voodoo chant awakens them with the spirit of Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) and his girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), who decide to rename Shithead. Chucky says he's a boy and names him Glen, and Tiffany declares she's a girl named Glenda. Wonder where they got that! The three hope to create a family by taking over the bodies of actress Jennifer Tilly and rapper/director Redman (Redman), as well as inseminating Tilly with the seed of Chucky to impregnate her with a new host for their child Glen/Glenda.

The "Child's Play" series has never taken itself too seriously. It started out more horror-centric, but over the years, it has been sliding further and further into the realm of comedy. "Seed of Chucky" is a dark comedy with horror elements sprinkled in here and there. It isn't trying to scare the audience or create tension at all. It takes the plot of an outrageous sex comedy and fills it with blood and guts. It is also beyond self-aware and plummets head-first into full-blown self-parody. In the previous movie, Jennifer Tilly played Tiffany and continues to voice her through this film as well. However, Jennifer Tilly also plays Jennifer Tilly, who is starring in the movie "Chucky Goes Psycho" within the movie "Seed of Chucky." Tiffany, played by Jennifer Tilly, wants to transfer herself into the fictional version of Jennifer Tilly, played by Jennifer Tilly, so she can be Jennifer Tilly. Where "Bride of Chucky" offered homages to other horror flicks, "Seed of Chucky" offers tributes to the work of John Waters. He even plays a paparazzi reporter here as well. Even the character names Glen and Glenda are references to the 1953 Ed Wood cult film "Glen or Glenda," which some consider one of the worst movies ever made. One of the biggest problems with this movie is that the humor is also suuuuuper dated. The script uses gender identity as a punch line and equates it to Dissociative identity disorder. One of Shithead's personalities is a psycho killer, and the other a meek little coward. It also pokes fun at the "casting couch" and displays it as a tool for women to get ahead rather than a means for powerful men to extort sex in exchange for financial favors. One of the main plot lines is about Jennifer Tilly trying to seduce Redman so she can play the role of The Virgin Mary in the movie he's making. Don't you get it? It's ironic! They make jokes about Julia Roberts sleeping her way into the Oscar-winning role of Erin Brockovich, placing the sexual predation on each and every woman while all the men sit around and gawk at and make comments about Jennifer Tilly's breasts. It's not funny, and it's not clever. In fact, it's pretty damn stupid.

"Seed of Chucky" is a dumb, immature male fantasy incarnate, and it has little to offer besides a few gory death scenes. We really didn't like this movie at all, and it's a shame to see how far the "Child's Play" franchise has fallen with this installment.

My Rating: 2/10
